Pantene: Want That Hair - Holiday Hair Tutorial + The Big Reveal!

Manicurity | Pantene: Want That Hair - Holiday Hair + The Big Reveal! (and tutorial)

Today's The Big Holiday Hair Reveal! If you read my brainstorming post (read it here!) I was torn between doing loose, retro waves OR a fancy bun. What style did I pick?! I went with an up-do because I liked that I could wear big, fluffy curls all day and then put my hair into a fancy bun before my holiday party. Plus having your hair up keeps it out of the way of winter coats and scarves, and out of your lipgloss (don’t you just hate doing your hair, and then a gust of wind sticks it onto your lipgloss?!)

I'm going to take you step by step through what I did to get my hair ready for a holiday updo. If your hair is dry, skip to the 'style' portion of this little tutorial (pictoral?) and go from there :D

Clean + Condition

The Pantene Pro-V Heat Shield Shampoo is a great way to start off a special ‘do! It contains heat-activated oil and provides a barrier around your hair follicles to keep it protected from heat styling (i.e. a 'heat shield', eh?!) This shampoo does contain sulfates, so I use it as a clarifying shampoo before doing hairstyles that use a lot of heat. It lathers well and smells great!
Tip: Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your delicate wet hair when it’s saturated with conditioner in the shower!

The Pantene Pro-V Heat Shield Conditioner has a light-weight formula. It is really easy to spread around, and provides enough slip to detangle even tho it is so light-weight.
Tip: Rinse your hair with cold water at the end of your shower to close the cuticle and make your hair extra shiny!

Prep

I prepped my hair for this style by applying the following products to my damp hair:

I spritzed the Pantene Advanced+ Keratin Repair KeraGloss Oil Mist and the Pantene Stylers Heat Protection Spray all over my damp tresses, then evenly distributed both products by brushing them through (gently!) with the Wet n' Dry brush (any sort of paddle brush would work, I just like how gentle the Wet n' Dry is with my fine, curly hair).

Then I flipped my hair over and scrunched from ends to roots to get my natural curls going! I spritzed some of the Pantene Volume Root Lifter Spray Gel at my roots all over to help me get some volume when I diffuse my curls, then used the Pantene Volume Triple Action Volume Mousse and scrunched it into my hair (again, from ends to roots).

Dry + Diffuse

I use a cotton t-shirt to dry my hair to keep it from getting frizzy! I roll my hair up into it like a turban (also known as ‘plopping’) to let my hair dry. Tip: Don’t leave your hair in your t-shirt turban for too long, or it will just trap the water there!

Once my hair is most of the way dry (at least half) I will finish it off using a diffuser on my hair dryer, making sure it gets extra volume! At this step you could spray some additional Pantene Volume Root Lifter Spray Gel to really get some extra va-va-voom volume going at the crown. When I'm diffusing, I try to use gravity to my advantage as much as possible by flipping my hair upside down and to either side so I can get as much volume at the roots as possible. To lock in shine and really finish it off, I use my dryer on 'low' and 'cool' at the end of my drying session.

Style

I’m going for a textured, twisty updo - sort of combining both of the looks from my second inspiration photo. To do this look you will need a comb, an elastic of some kind, bobby pins, and an optional blingy hair accessory.

Do your part where you like to do it! I chose a side part. Next use a comb to part from ear to ear across your crown and pull that portion forward and out of the way (like the top left photo of the collage below)

Using an elastic, pull the back part of your hair into a loose-ish ponytail - you want to have some volume, so not a snug sleek ponytail, but also not so loose that your elastic will fall out. Lift the top section out of the pony for a little extra volume and dimension (like bottom left photo). If you want extra volume on top, tease your hair before doing this pony step!

Now we'll make the bun! Loosely twist the ponytail into a fancy hair rope, then wrap the hair around the ponytail holder. Pin this in place until it feels secure.

For this twisty detail I separated my thinner lefthand side portion into two parts, and twisted each section. Then I twisted those two pieces together! Finally I pulled this single twist of all of my lefthand side hair back and under the bun, then wrapped it up and around and secured it in place.

For the loose hair on the right side of my head, I did a modified waterfall twist. First I hold the hair loosely where I want the twisty details to stay for my final 'do. Then I pull a small section of hair out from the back of the bundle of hair and wrap that piece down, then up and around all of the hair. I repeat this 'wrap' method until I reach my ear, then pin the twisted hair in place. Tbh it reminds me a lot of making a basic friendship bracelet (like the hair wrap style one)!

I wrapped this section of hair across to the left and then around my bun, counter-clockwise. I felt like going on top and around with this section would balance out going below and around with the other section of hair!

Use those bobby pins! Tip: Put your bobby pins in with the wavy side face down; they'll grip your hair more tightly that way!

Once you’re happy with how your ‘do looks, use the Pantene Pro-V Stylers Hairspray to keep it all in place! I like the hold it gives, and it isn't stiff or crunchy.

Optional - but highly recommended: Finish the whole thing off with a fancy hair accessory! I used a blinged out hair clip. Also it made me feel like a flapper, which is cool.
